    Kaipara Harbour South

    The peninsula just north of Helensville and about 1.5hrs from Auckland cdb forms the southern end of the Kaipara  harbour, the western side is woodhill forest which runs from Muriwai all the way up to the Waionui inlet at the Kaipara Harbour entrance, the beach is drivable on an out going tide and is a public road all the way up to the Kaipara Harbour. Woodhill forest is a meca for out door activities there is mountain biking, forest walks,beach walks,fishing on Muriwai beach and 4x4 driving in the off road park at Rimmers road.

    The main access road is South Head road which starts back at Helensville, there is only one settlement up the peninsula which is Shelly beach and there is a long wharf located at Shelly beach that is ideal for kids and parents alike to fish from, at low tide the water is very shallow but on the incoming tide Kahawai and snanpper can be caught from the wharf.

    There are three lakes located on the peninsula lake Kereta accessed from Wilson road,Lake Ototoa which has been renamed to Lake Rototoa and is accessed of Donohue road and lake Kuwakatai which has no access to the public. There is also a coastal walk located right at the end of South Head road and a regional farm park. Waionui Inlet is located at the harbour entrance and offers a coast walk along the inlet forest walks and is a prime place for a picnic during the summer months.

    Te Rau Puriri Regional Park

    Te Rau Pūriri Regional Park, is a farm located on the South Head road. Covering 247 hectares the park is a mix of rolling farmland and steep gully systems. To the east the park stretches over a kilometre along the shores of the Kaipara Harbour. There are various walking tracks through the bush and over the farmland.

    Lake Rototoa

    Lake Ototoa, now named Lake Rototoa is located around three quarters of the way up the peninsula and is accessed off Donohue road on the right hand side of  South Head road, the lake is small and is stocked with rainbow trout each year there are walking tracks around the lake, the lake is a good place for a picnic in summer.

    Mosquito Bay Coast walk

    Mosquito Bay is located right at the end of South head road you can go no further, there is parking on the side of the road and a steep long track that takes you down to the Kaipara Harbour, it is possible to walk all the way up to Wainui Inlet which would take a couple of hours one way, and can only be done on an out going tide.
