     Lion Rock Piha Beach

Surfing is a great addition to your New Zealand vacation and a wonderful way to meet locals. New Zealand has a huge coastline for the small size of our country partly for the ocean on all sides and partly for a few very large harbours like the Kaipara and the Manukau.

Those searching for particular surf breaks will also find magnificent coastal views, and isolated beaches. Alternatively to find the best beaches for surfing at any time of the year join a surf tour and benefit from the expertise of guides and coaches, surf coaching and tours are located at the most popular surf beaches like raglan and piha and in other parts of the country where surfing is popular.

Head out of Auckland and right away you will have a choice of East or West Coast surfing all with in a short distance. Muriwai and Piha on the West Coast offer black sand with great surfing waves. Wahi beach further over by the Coromandel peninsula is a popular east coast surf beach, Piha is the most popular of the west coast surf beaches around Auckland and is packed with surfers on the weekends particually in the summer months.

The far north offers an unlimited amount of surf beaches on both the west coast and the east coast, Ahipara at the start of Nintey mile beach has some stunning surf in the right conditions, and the same goes for Great Exhibition bay on the east coast when the wind and swell conditions arejust right there can be some big surf here.

Heading south of Auckland is the well known surfing meca of Raglan on the west coast out from Hamilton, and the New plymouth coastline boosts some stunning surf beaches as well, as with most beaches in New Zealand the conditions have to right for the best surf, the west coast any where along our shore line  always has surf of some size due to the prevailing westerly winds, how ever we have seen the west coast completly flat calm on some occasions.

Down the bottom of the north island Wellington has Lyall bay and some stunning surf beaches can be found on the Wairarapa coastline, alot of these beaches from the far north down to the Wairarapa are remote and some of them are dangerous in adverse conditions when you are surfing beaches you have not surfed before it pays to talk to the locals they know the conditions and dangers.
