    Wairere Falls Te Aroha

    Wairere Falls

On a stunning winters day with no wind and a bright clear sky we headed over the Hauraki plains to the Wairere falls track, the track is located on the Goodwin road a fair way along the old Te Aroha rd just outside of Matamata in the Waikato. The car parking is limited at the end of Goodwin road and on a weekend the car park is usually full although you can park on the side of the road.

The walk way starts off at the base of the Kaimai Ranges and this is just about the last time you will see the sun as the native bush provides a thick canopy over head, the track starts of easy until you get to the start of the rocks and there are alot of rocks that form the base of the track and these make an interesting walk if you do not watch where your going.

Once you cross over the stream via a bridge the track follows the river up to the base lookout which offers a great view of the Wairere falls and they drop an impressive distance down the rock face, from here the track gets a little tough, you climb up a circling set of steps and up a shear rock face to the top and the rocky track gives way to alot of tree roots and once again you need to watch your step.

These tree roots will keep you on your toes all the way to the top most of this top section of track is steep, and altough the track is steeped the steps are rocks and tree roots not timber steps and they are gnarly in some places, as you approach the top of the falls the track levels out and is a relief from the accent up the mountain side.

At the top of the main falls there is another set of water falls back from the main drop, you can walk out here very carefully and get a great view of the main water fall as it drops over the edge of the cliff, further down the track is a look out with a stunning view out over Matamata and the Hauraki plans.

This is an interesting walking track as there is alot to see on the way up the mountain side, from the river in the valley and the native bush to the rock formations that line the mountain side, the walk up takes around 1.5 hrs at a steady pace, and pack a picnic for when you reach the top as the view by the river side is great.
