    Kitekite Falls Piha Auckland

    Kitekite Falls

Kitekite Falls2The Kitekite Falls are a great attraction and a must see when visiting Piha Beach on Aucklands wild West Coast, the falls are around one hours drive from Auckland city and the access is located by driving to the end of Glen Esk road at the southern end of Piha, the return walk to the falls takes around one and a half hours to complete.

The falls have a bit of history attached as there was a dam built right at the very top of the falls and Kauri logs were milled further up stream and transported to the dam when they had enough logs backed up behind the dam the water was released and the logs would be sent over the face of the falls and carried down stream to be collected.

The walk to the falls takes around forty minutes and the track is well graded and suitable in all weather conditions the walk is reasonably flat apart from a few slight inclines, a little way up the track you arrive at the Knutzen Track junction you can cross over here and walk up the other side of the stream or stay on the Kitekite track both end up at the water fall.

The falls drop down in six steps forty metres up from the valley floor, there is a large rock platform to view the falls from, and a deep hole directly under the falling water, the pool is popular in the summer and usually full of people swimming.

A great time to view the falls is when there has been alot of rain as a big flow of water rushes down from the valley up in the Waitakere Ranges. The walk is ideal for all the family to enjoy, the rock platform below the falls is a great place to have a picnic during the summer months and you can swim in the water on a hot summers day.
