Tom Thumb Karamatura Valley

Tom Thumb Walk Huia

Tom Thumb is a fantastic walking track which gets the tittle from the massive Kauri tree at the summit, the walk is accessed through the Karamatura Valley on the way out to Whatipu Beach west of Auckland City, the car park to the Tom Thumb is located just past Huia on the right hand side of the road, the carpark is located beside a beautiful little stream with picnic ares located around the grounds.

To access the Tom Thumb walk you need to walk along the Karamatura Track that follows the stream for around twenty minutes and you will arrive at the junction of the Karamatura and Tom Thumb tracks, the walk to the junction is fairly easy along a graded and graveled track.

From the junction you drop down to the stream and the walk continues on the other side of the stream, the track rises up from here through a rock garden and continues to rise through some beautiful native trees with Kauri and Totara all through the walk, around fifteen minutes of climbing the track starts to zig zag around a massive rock bluff.

The walk from here is relentless climbing, the track is rough, filled with tree roots and very muddy in sections, you arrive at another junction straight ahead takes you to the Twin Peaks Track, to the left which is the route we take continues on the Tom Thumb Track.

Around ten more minutes of walking you arrive at the end of the Tom Thumb and the junction of the Twin Peaks walk, there is a massive Kauri tree located here the Tom Thumb, which is more than likely around eight hundred years old, the shear girth and hight of the tree is impressive, here there is a rest stop before the final accent up to the summit.

From the Kauri and rest stop the real climb begins, the track here is narrow and the gradient starts to steepen with loose rocks thrown in the mix this section is relentless on the legs as you accent up the narrow ridge line the summit is around fifteen minutes of hard climbing, you arrive at a small clearing.

The view from the summit is breath taking you can see Puponga point to the east and the southern side of the Manukau Harbour, care needs to taken here as there is a very short unmarked track to the north and for the daring you are right over the top of the Huia Reservoir with a scary vertical drop of a few hundred metres down to the water.

The walk to the summit via the Tom Thumb Track takes around one hour one way from the car park, depending on fitness and weather conditions, the stream crossing is beside a great little water fall a great place for a picnic, and there are glimpses of the Manukau Harbour and the rock bluff on the other side of the valley through the trees, the walk is not suitable for the unfit as the climb is relentless all the way to the summit.
