The trail starts at the Pureora visitor center and climbs up the Pureora mountain to a height of around three hundred and fifty meters and then flows down the other side to join the western side of the Hauhungaroa ranges here the trail crosses over numerous gorges these are spanned by the longest suspension bridges in New Zealand.

The first days stop is at the Piropiro flats camping ground the grounds provide basic amenities for trail riders for over night stays, the second day is through a mix of native bush and forest and takes you pass the remains of the Ongarue Tramway that provided the timber industry with transport back in the early days.

From the tramway and the spiral you carry on through bush until you arrive at Ongarue, this is the pick up point for all trail users, cyclists can carry on to Taumarunui another twenty six kms further on along on a gravel road and be picked up there, if you are an experienced mountain biker you could ride the trail in one day at a good pace.
