Pukemokemoke Loop track

Pukemokemoke Loop track

The Pukemokemoke Loop track is a short but interesting walk north of Gordonton in the Waikato the track starts of Tauhei road just past Whitikahu, there is a carpark at the end of a short access road, however when we got to the end the carpark was well under water with the creek flowing over the road so we parked out on the main road and walked in.

The area was still very wet from earlier rains however the track was in good condition, the first part of the track up to the summit follows the creek and is easy walking through stunning native bush, around 10 minutes into the walk the steps start and there are a few of them, then the steps turn into a broad walk this is here to protect the Kauri trees from root damage from hikers on the track.

The walk to the summit takes around 45 minutes the top section was a bit muddy and slippery on the exposed tree roots, how ever we managed to get to the top and were rewarded with a great view out across the Waikato with nearly perfect views around the mountain top.

From the summit you can return back down the timber steps or carry on around the loop track which is the way we went, and the decent was not easy as the track is steep and extremely wet, the track back down the loop is through thick native bush with no timber steps and a constant water flow over the track, which made it interesting the walk to the base of the mountain took around 25 minutes and you arrive back at the creek and a short walk back to the road.
