Explore The Many Fantastic Walking Tracks Available Through Out New Zealand Including The Nine Great Walks.

    Maungakawa Reserve Waikato

    Maungakawa 5

This great short walk is located in the Waikato region around forty five minutes from Hamilton city, the reserve is accessed from the Maungakawa road by driving up to the summit then turn into Gudex road, there are two car parks here the first carpark is the start of the loop track and the lookout, the second carpark is where the loop track exits.

The Maungakawa reserve sits on top of a old volcanic cone and offers fantastic views from various vantage points around the mountain, this area was a Tuberculosis sanitorium in the early 1900s and you can still see the outline of the buildings to this day, there was also a nearby Maori pa site located here in the early 1800s.

From the first carpark the track descends down the volcanic mountain side and through native bush and trees there are a few large natives mixed in with the bush, the track is well marked and maintained and suitable for the whole family, and is an easy thirty minute walk down the mountain and back up the other side to the second carpark.

The second carpark is the Gudex Memorial park there is a stone memorial here commemorating Michael Christian Gudex for the preservation of New Zealand's natural resources and horticulture, this park is open grassland and offers a fantastic view down to lake Karapiro and around the Waikato area, there are picnic tables scattered all around the park and would be a fantastic place to picnic in the summer.
