    Karakariki Track 1

The Karakariki walking track is a Department of Conservation managed track and is located just north of Whatawhata on the outskirts of Hamilton in the Waikato, the walk is a mix of farmland, riverside and native bush, the walk starts on private farmland and there is a small carpark at the end of the access road.

The walk starts with a swing bridge over the stream this part of the track is on private land and for around five hundred meters you are walking through a swamp, and the mud is deep in places, we went through in the middle of winter which did not help, there really should be a board walk here which would make the walk a bit more enjoyable.

Once through the swamp the walk follows the riverside for a considerable distance this part is enjoyable the river is flanked with native bush for most of the way, around twenty minutes you arrive at another small swing bridge which crosses the river to access a beautiful little water fall, this area would be great in the summer for a picnic.

From the water fall you enter the native bush and the reserve, there is a steep short climb up a bank to the main part of the walk which follows a ridge line up through the native bush, this section is pleasant and a great part of the walk, however the walk finishes at a fence line at the top of the ridge and there is no view anywhere which is a bit disappointing but the walk is a great little walk despite the swamp at the start the walk is around fifty minutes one way.
