Kakepuku Mountain walk

Kakepuku Mountain

Kakepuku Mountain is an old volcanic cone in the Waipa District south of Hamilton in the Waikato, the cone is also an historic reserve as there are two Maori pa sites located on the mountain. There is also a great walking track that passes through parts of the original forest that once covered this volcanic cone, the summit offers magnificent views of the surrounding Waipa Waikato landscape.

The walk starts in the Kakepuku Reserve carpark located off the Kakepuku rd south west of Te Awamutu, the main part of the walk is on a 4x4 track which circles around the mountain and gradually spirils to the top this part of the main track is extremely slippery mud and in the wet tramping poles are required more so when decending back down the track.

The main trail up the slippery 4x4 track to the summit takes around one hour before you enter any native bush, then there are quite a few steps to climb for around 15 more minutes before you get to the first look out that provides stunning views north to Mount Pirongia and waikato farmland below.

From here and around ten more minutes of walking you will arrive at the main look out tower which offers 360 degree views all around the surrounding country side, however the bush and trees have grown to high and you can only just glimpse the views below over the tree tops, the Maori pa site is located here as well, and a timber walkway circles around the historic site, the walk is easy apart from the slippery lower track the top track is steep in places but with formed steps.
