Hatea River Walks

The Hatea River Walk is a fantastic walk in the Northland town of Whangarei the walkway follows the Hatea River from the Whangarei Falls all the way to the town basin where the river empties into the Whangarei Harbor.

The walkway is connected with a series of shorter walks that can be walked in shorter sections or one continuous three hour walk from the Whangarei basin to the Whangarei Water Falls or the other way from the Waterfall to the town basin.

Hatea Tidal Estuary To Mair Park

From the town basin the walk way starts at the end of Vale Road and follow the board walk through the Elliot Reserve and along the Hatea tidal inlet, there are markers desinating the walk way with a image of an eel, follow the markers through to Mair Park this section will take around forty minutes.

Mair Park To AH Reed Memorial Park

From Mair Park follow the markers and over the bridge the walk way runs along a footpath following the Hatea River to Whareora Road and on to the AH Reed Memorial Park this section to the park takes around forty five minutes to complete.

AH Reed Memorial Park To Whangarei Falls

This final section from the AH Reed Memorial Park to the Whangarei Falls is the most scenic as you are now in the native bush and the only sounds here are the river and the birds in the trees, the walk way follows the Hatea River with a crossing over a suspension brige around half way along this section, in the summer there are swimming holes along this part of the river this final section will take around forty minutes to complete.

The AH Reed Memorial Park is a fantastic native forest walk through native Kauri and Totara trees there is a canopy walk through the tree tops and also incorporates the Pukenui Waterfall so allow extra time to explore this fantastic park while on the walk way, this walk is suitable for all the family and all weather conditions, with walk way taking around three hours one way you need to allow time to return or arrange to be picked up at the end.
