Karamu Walkway Waikato

Karamu Walkway2

The Karamu walkway is a little different to the walks we usually go on as this one starts of in dense native bush then opens up onto a stunning farmland trail, the walk can be started from two ends, the first is from the main hwy out to Raglan, the trail head is just before the summit, the second place is from Old Mountain rd which is off Te Pahu rd just outside of Whatawhata in the Waikato.

This walk is best taken in ideal conditions with no wind and no rain, we had both and was not as pleasent as it could of been, from raglan summit end the track winds up the side of a steep hill in dense native bush for around 15 minutes then opens up onto the farmland ridge line, you get a stunning view down steep valleys to Whatawhata and the plains below.

This is what you get for the remaining walk to Old Mountain rd the trail starts to decend down and back up a few more ridge lines before you finally arrive at the Old Mountain rd, unless you have arranged for someone to pick you up you will need to return back the same way.

The time taken to reach this point is around 1.5 hrs, however this is not the end of the trail, the Karamu walkway keeps going on over the Old Mountain rd and links up with various other trails further along before finally finishing at the Lime works loop rd around 5 more hrs away.
