bridge to nowhere Wanganui

The bridge to nowhere was built in the 1930s by world war one servicemen to gain access to newly developed farms in the Wanganui region but the pioneering land developments never eventuated and the place was deserted some time later. Some of the returned servicemen took up residence and attempted to farm the area but by 1942 only a few of the farmers remained. They were eventually forced to leave when the road access was no longer  maintained. and by 1944, everyone had gone and left the area all together.

Located in the Mangapurua valley the bridge is now a New Zealand land mark, there are two ways to get to the bridge to nowhere, either by a  40 minute or so easy walk from the Mangapurua Landing on the Whanganui River a boat ride is required up the river or by the  Mangapurua track, accessible from either Whakahoro or Ruatiti road end.

The walk in is through stunning native forest and even though there is a bridge, there is no road reamaining it was never finished when the bridge was abandoned in 1930 this walk is popular with trampers all year round, the bridge is protected by the historic places trust and is a category one listing, the department of conservation keep the bridge and the tracks in tip top condition .
