Te Ara Tirohia walk

This peaceful and tranquil walk is located in the Maungatautari ecological reserve and forms part of the northern enclosure on Maungatautari mountain in the waikato, access to the walk is at the end of Hicks road a few kms west of lake Karapiro.

From the end of Hicks road there is an easy walk through open farmland for around fifteen minutes to the boundry fence of the reserve, there are two one way gates here the one on the right takes you to the Maungatautari summit about a 2 hour walk, the gate on the left is the start of the Te  Ara Terohia loop track.

The loop is only around forty minutes of walking and the first few hundred meters is on a slight gradient up hill and follows a great little stream for most of the way to the bridge crossing, the mature native trees are stunning towering above and all you can hear are the birds and the rustle of the wind through the tree tops.

Past the bridge the track levels out for a bit then follows the valley back to a second bridge crossing, the native bush through this section of the walk is like walking through a rain forest, a lush rich green color and mature native trees every where, over the second crossing you arrive back at the start of the walk and a fantastic view down the farmland to the east and lake Karapiro.
