Lion Rock Piha Beach

Tasman Lookout is a fantastic short walk at South Piha that takes you over cliff tops, along secluded sandy beaches and through a cave for the adventurous and offers some stunning views out over the wild West Coast and all this with in fifty minutes from Auckland city.

Piha is a favorite destination for alot of reasons for alot of different people, some like the peace and quit of the many bush walks around the area, south piha is a world class surfing destination, and some just like swimming in the wild west coast surf.

The walk to the Tasman Lookout starts at The end of the road to South Piha past the surf life saving club, you will see the track on the left hand side just before the sand starts a short walk through some bush to the top of the hill is the first of two look outs, here you get a fantastic uninterrupted view of Lion Rock and North Piha.

The track from the look out follows the side of a rocky cliff to the second lookout which offers a great view of Taitomo Island and Nunn Rock tucked in behind, you can walk up the side of Taitomo Island at low tide to the top and you are rewarded with a stunning view of North Piha beach, this is only for experiancd trampers as there is lose rocks and massive drops into the ocean below.

From the second lookout the track drops down to beach level if the tide is out you can return to the carpark along the beach and over some rocks, However the walk does not stop here straight ahead once on the sand the track carries on through some bush to the blow hole you can decsend down into the start of the cave, this area is extremly dangerous with water and swells crashing through the cave opening from the sea.

Over the top of the cave the walking track carries on up a short steep section and onto a great rock viewing platform, this area is extremely dangerous with lose rocks and high cliffs but the view of the west coast and the bush clad valley behind is stunning, the walk is only around twenty minutes one way, but there is so much to explore along the way you could spend a few hours exploring the beaches, caves and rocks that this area has to offer.
