Otarawao Bay To Motuora Island

Mahurangi2

The kayak trip starts off Otarawao bay on the southern shores of the Mahurangi harbour north of Waiwera. Access is via Mahurangi West road turning right off state hwy one on the northen side of Puhoi. There is a camp ground here right on the beach front, and this place can be very crowded in the summer months.

You can launch the kayak right in front of the car park so no draging the kayak around the sand to much, the first place to head to is Dairy bay which is the end of a long peninsula that starts way back at snells beach, depending on the tide direction you can head right up into the harbour around scotts landing, there are secluded beaches and bays every where in here there is also a large flowtila of boats mored in the harbour as well.

Heading back out of the harbour you can explore Te Hapua Island a rocky island just outside the harbour entrance, it pays to have a rest here as the trip out to Motuora Island is a fair way, and pays to pick calm water as well, trying to cross open ocean in strong wind is not reccomended.

There is a house on the inland side of the island here, not sure wheather you can land on the island or not the whole island may be private property, depending on the wind direction head for the southern end and swing around the northern end and back to Otarawao Bay or the other way around.

On the way back you can explore Pudding Island just of the tip of the bay, there is also a little tidal inlet just around the point to explore. You could do this trip from the Puhoi river just south of Otarawao Bay as well just depends on your fitness.
