Mahaukura Track Mount Pirongia

Mahaukura Track

The Mahaukura track is part of the Mount Pirongia walking tracks, a system of tracks that are linked together from various locations around the Mountain, this track starts at the very end of Grey road off Te Pahu road in the Waikato Region.

These tracks can get very busy in the summer hiking season, but in the winter there is not so much foot traffic, a short walk from the car park brings you to a junction, the track on the right is a one hour loop track that stays on the lower level of the mountain and is suitable for the entire family including the kids, the track on the left is a two hike to the Wharauroa lookout this is where we went.

The lower section was in excellent shape with a gravel base, but this soon runs out and the base turns to clay but was in a reasonable condition, the lower section is an easy ascent through beatuiful native bush as with most walking tracks up Mount Pirongia.

Around the one hour mark the track is starting to cut up in places and with a few boggy sections thrown in and the slippery tree roots rise up out of the ground, there is a short side track with a window in the trees where you can view the valley floor below.

From the middle section to the top section around 1.5 hrs into the walk the track is starting to get tough, the incline is getting alot steeper and there are quite a few obsticales to clamber over like massive tree roots, big banks and a maise of tree roots that trap your feet if your not careful.

This top section just keeps on going you think you can see the top lookout through the trees but is just gaps in the canopy, when you start to clamber over the rocks you are not far from the lookout, and the view is fantastic there are two lookouts here the second one is around one minute from the first, the track from here is difficult and for experieced trampers, we walked for around ten minutes further up the track and turned back as this carries on to the summit for around another two hrs of walking.
