Hauraki Rail Trail

    Hauraki Rail Trail

This great mountain bike trail is a must for any mountain bikers the multi day trail is around one hundred and forty five kms long and will take around three days to ride depending on your fitness level, you can just ride sections of the trail if you have vehicle transport with out riding the whole trail in one go.

The start of the trail is at the Thames wharf on the beautiful coromandal peninsula, this first section from the Thames wharf to Paeroa is the easiest in terms of riding passing through farmland and small towns distance around 35 kms.

From Paeroa there are two options, the first is through the Karangahake Gorge a stunning ride along the Ohinemuri river through to the gold mining town of Waihi, and you can catch the vintage gold mining train from Waikino station for the last 8 kms to Waihi if you take this route you need to return the same way back to Paeroa to carry on the trail.

The second option is from Paeroa to Te Aroha Station this follows the old railway line to the station at the base of Mount Te Aroha, Te Aroha also boasts a ten km mountain bike trail that winds around the base of the mountain there are also hot springs located here in the Te Aroha domain as well as the summit walking track that takes you to the top of Mount Te Aroha.

For the fit mountain biker you could ride from Thames to Te Aroha in one day, if you need to ride the full trail out to Waihi and back to Paeroa then on to Te Aroha, the ride is a multi day one, the Karangahake gorge is full of walking tracks and also the gold fields railway so the ride is full of places to explore along the way there is accommodation at Waihi and Te Aroha.
