The Crown Tramway Track is located in the Karangahake Gorge just east of Paeroa in the Waikato, the car park is a few kms into the gorge on the side of the Ohohinemuri River. There are several tracks located here once you have walked over the long swing bridge that crosses the Ohohinemuri River, there is a loop track of sorts on the left hand side over another swing bridge this takes you along the river to where the Hauraki Rail trail emerges from the tunnel you can enter the tunnel and this takes you west of the car park and emerges out on a rail bridge and you can return to the car park via a walking track.
The Crown Tramway track starts above the old ruins just above the river the track to the right takes you up to the mountain summit, the track on the left is the tramway track, the first few hundred meters is along the river offering stunning views into the ever narrowing gorge, there are several old mine shafts along here but they are blocked of.
Around ten minutes into the walk the track starts to hug the cliff and is cut into the side of the rock face with overhanging rock just above your head and a stunning view straight down into the Waitawheta River and a few hundred meters on you will arrive at the underground pump house and a stunning river crossing over a swing bridge to the other side of the river. From this point you can carry on the main track and this will take you to the Dickey Flat campground around 1.5 hrs walk away.
Just past the swing bridge and the under ground pump house is a track on the left hand side this track leads back to the carpark and is a stunning walk through the upper gold mine and past a window cut out of the cliff side offering a view straight down onto the swing bridge below.
If you take this route back you need to take a torch as parts of the tunnel are pitch black, around half way through there is an other tunnel leading into the hillside to explore, emerging out the other side you follow the tram tracks back to the ruins of the ore crusher a giant block of concrete that housed the machinery to extract the gold.
