Access here is state hwy one as far as the road goes, head down the track to the light house and not that far down on your left is a walking track that follows the ridge line down to the Cape Maria van diemen beach the sand here is soft so if the tide is out walk down by the water, the views around here are absolutly breath taking this part of the country is one of the most secluded there is, the base under the sand here is volcanic rock you will see parts of it sticking out of the sand.

The Island at the point is Motuopao Island and is a sanctuary and no landing is permited, up and over the dunes is the start of the west coast and Taupiri Island is in front of you, Cape Maria is regarded as the top coast, which runs right around to Spirits Bay And Hooper point.If you climb high up onto the hills you will get a view of Scotts Point to the south, then the start of Nintey mile beach that runs down to Ahipara at the other end.

There is a track Here that goes over the hills to Twilight Beach on the other side of the rocky out crop, the tracks are marked with orange staks in the ground some where along here is the return to state hwy one back on the road to Cape Reinga it is quicker going this way than back tracking the way you come in but some one needs to pick up as it is a long haul back to the light house. This walk is not an easy one and will take all day so be prepard and pick good wheather.
