Whakatane By The Sea

Whakatane harbor

 Whakatane in the Bay Of Plenty is located south of Tauranga and is nestled beside a scenic tidal inlet and harbour, Whakatane is the gate way to White Island an active volcano just offshore from Whakatane town. There are a few charter boats available from Whakatane that will take you out to the island, and there are also tour companies that take you onto the island for a walk around the volcano, helicopter and plane flights are available for a more scenic view from the sky.

The waters around White Island are also famous for the best Kingfish Captures in the world holding two all tackle world records of 52 kgs each one caught in 1984 and the second caught in 2007 by a Whakatane local, incredibly both the exact same weight.

Moutohora Island also known as Whale Island is located north of Whakatane and sits just of the coastline,the island is a wildlife sanctuary and home to rare birds and reptiles there are fully guided tours and walks available from Whakatane tour companies.

Kohi Point Track starts off Sea View road in Whakatane and follows the ridge line out to the headland of Whakatane harbour and ends at Otarawairere bay on the south side of the headland the walk is around 1.5 to 2 hrs long and there are stunning views out to White Island and the coast line to the north and south of the harbour.

Just to the south of Whakatane is the small harbour of Ohope, here you can walk out along the sand bar that protects the harbour from the ocean, the harbour is also a safe place to kayak and there are inlets and tidal streams to explore every where, there are numerous mountain bike tracks dotted around the area inland from the coast.
