Tongariro Forest Park

The Tongariro forest park is an adventure play ground located next to the Tongariro National park of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe mountains the area is conservation park for rare kiwi and other endangerd birds.

There are numerous activities in the park including world class mountain bike trails, the best kmown is the 42 traverse which is a 42 km long multi use track for 4x4 and mountain bikers, although the 4x4 have restricted access from march to November the mountain bikes have access year round and the track presents challenging terrain through native forest and the awesome Canyon valley, with superb views back to the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.

There are caves located in the forest, the Okupata caves are located off state hwy 47 and turn in to john mcdonald road then left onto Pukehinau road and follow the signs to the caves the caves are a stream bed and a lot of debris gets washed through the cave system and is prone to flooding in heavy rain so pays to only enter with a guide.

There are numerous hiking tracks located in the forest park which are very popualr with the tramper and hikers, the 42 traverse being the longest, but there are shorter tracks like the Taurewa track at around 4.5 kms and follows the old tree milling trails around the forest park.
