The Hunua Ranges Auckland

Hunua Falls

The Hunua Ranges are a major catchment area for drinking water for Auckland city, the ranges take up just about the whole western side of the firth of Thames, there are four lakes in the area two of them man made dams, access to the ranges are through Papakura south Auckland. Follow Beach Road across Great South Road and along Settlement Road. Turn right by Edmund Hillary School into Hunua Road. Follow Hunua Road through the Hunua Gorge to the Hunua village and your there.

Camping

There are alot of activities available in the ranges, the Hunua falls are an easy walk from the car park, there are eight camping grounds located within the ranges, they all require booking and there is a fee to camp there although the fee is only small, some of the camp grounds have facilities some do not, all the camping grounds are run by the Auckland city council, dogs are allowed in the ranges but they must be on a leash and are prohibited in the camping grounds in the picnic areas and also prohibited in the catchment area of the dams.

Horse Riding Trails

There are horse riding trails located in the lower Mangatawhiri valley, a riders pass is required to ride a horse here available from the Auckland city council website, the main riding loop takes you down to the  Mangatawhiri camping ground and there are several other loops crossing the main one, horses must stay to the designated riding tracks as other tracks are for walking and also for mountain biking.

Mountain Bike Trails

There are a range of short and long mountain bike tracks located in the ranges around 5 to 20 kms long and there is also a mountain bike park area of sorts, located around 200m from the Upper Moumoukai car park the mountain bike skills area  features berms, ramps, rock garden, decent dop offs and a pump track. This small area is a good place to warm up and practice ride before heading out onto the main Moumoukai Valley track network.

Walking Tracks

The ranges feature around fifteen or so walking tracks ranging from a few kms to 15 kms long the tracks are well maintained and are a fairly easy walk in the summer months, but can be a bit muddy come winter time, there are several picnic areas located in the ranges and with in walking distance of the carpark and the area is ideal for family adventures.
