Spirits Bay Northland

spirits bay Northland

Located at the very top of the North Island Spirits bay is the most northly camping ground in New Zealand, the drive out along Spirits bay road is a little boring as there is not alot to see here, at the camping ground there are very basic public amenities and the camp ground is right beside a small stream it pays to boil any water from the stream for drinking or better still bring your own in with you there is a petrol station and groceries back at Watiki landing on the main road there is also cabin acommodation here as well.

Small boats can be launched in the stream at high tide but you will more than likely need to drag it over the sand the small island in front of the beach is acessable at low tide and is a good place to catch a Kahawai for dinner, the more adventurous can head out to the right and walk along the rocks to rod holders ledge here you can catch most species but if you want kingfish then carry on to bucks ledge which is to the cave you can go no further, these places are very dangerous as there are strong currents and large swells the main beach is also a good place to drop a line in as well.

The most important item to bring with you when camping at spirits bay is mosquito repellent the best ones are the battery ones, or you will regret ever camping here they are really bad, as with most camp grounds during the off season there is plenty of space for a camp but at xmas time it will be packed full.
