    Pukematekeo Waitakere Ranges

    Pukematakeo Summit4

Pukematekeo is located in the Waitakere Ranges and can be accessed by foot from the Cascade Kauri Regional park, or by driving up a narrow and steep road that is off Scenic Drive on the way out to the west coast. The walk to the summit via the Pukematekeo track starts in the Cascade Kauri a series of walking tracks located in the Waitakere Ranges Regional park, the track entrance is on the access road to the Waitakere Golf Club, and right over the road from the ranger station.

There is not a marked carpark here and you will need to park further down the access road, the track starts of in a steep accent through native bush, this track is not graded and is covered with tree roots and slippery mud, the walk is best taken in the summer time when the ground is dry.

The walk to the summit takes around two hours return to the carpark, around half way up the climb there is a small track that heads into the bush for a short distance and offers a stunning view out over the golf course and the Waitakere ranges way down in the valley.

The walking track emerges at the top of Pukematekeo on the access road and you need to walk up the road a short distance, on the right hand side before the summit are the remains of the original bridge that crosses over the access road that was built in 1935, you can cross the bridge to reach the summit.

From the trig station at the very top you get a stunning three hundred and sixty degree view, from Auckland City and Rangitoto Island and the outer Hauraki Gulf, through to the Waitakere Reservoir way down in the valley and right around the West Coast.
