This stunning walk is located in the Waitakere Ranges just west of Auckland city, the trail is maintained by the Auckland city council and Montana Wines hence where the trail name originated from, the trail is in an area called the Cascade Kauri.
The trail starts and ends at the Falls road carpark accessed by driving through the Waitakere golf club to the very end of the road the view of the rich green native forest is stunning and the golf course has to be one of the most scenic golf courses in New Zealand.
The Montana Heritage Trail is made up of four separate tracks, from the carpark you walk across the suspension bridge and onto the Auckland City walk this is a loop track that takes around thirty minutes to walk and follows the river then loops around back onto the golf course road three hundred meters above the carpark.
Around two hundred meters along from the start of the Auckland City walk is a Maori carving on the right this is the second track of the Montana Heritage Trail, the Upper Kauri track this walk takes you up through stunning mature Kauri trees and acends up the ridge line to the summit this part of the walk is just great with glimpses of the valley and native bush below.
Eventually you arrive at the third track of the Montana Heritage trail the Long Road track, from here the walk starts to swing around towards the Waitakere Reservoir and follows the lake to the head of the dam you can take a short diversion and walk over the dam which offers stunning views down the valley to the golf course.
From the dam the trail follows onto the final track the Fence line track and you decend back down into the valley below and through more stunning native trees until you arrive at the Cascade track and a short walk back to the carpark, the trail is around eight kms long and will take the best part of a full day but is well worth the walk.
