Lake Wainamu Bethells

Lake Wainamu Bethells5

Lake Wainamu is a small natural sand lake located just south of Te Henga (Bethells Beach) around forty five minutes from the Auckland cbd there is very limited vehicle parking as the location is also a section of the Hillary Trail which runs from the Arataki visitor centre to Muriwai beach on the west coast.

The lake is probably known more for the making of films like the power ranges and Xena, Taylor Swift has also recorded a music video around Lake Wainamu as well, the greatest feature of the area has to be the gigantic sand dunes contained in an area just in front of the lake these sand dunes are the natural dam that holds the lake back.

The walk from the carpark to the lake takes around thirty minutes and there are two options to arrive there, the first and easier option is to follow the stream around the side of the sand dunes, the second option is over the dunes this direction gives you a great view of the lake from the top of the dunes, however if there is any wind blowing you will be sand blasted.

There is a walking track that theoretically loops the lake however there is a catch, if you take the stream walk to the lake you are on the left hand side this section is well maintained gravel to the end of the lake and the water fall, over the sand dunes you are on the right side of the lake, the track is great for a short distance then deep mud and slush to the water fall at the end of the lake.

The walk is great for all the family, the kids will have a blast on the dunes and some adults aswell, the sand dunes can be tough going in windy conditions, the lake is not ideally suited to any swimming, the loop track will take around one hour to complete, the left hand side is easy walking to the water fall the right you are going to get muddy for sure.
