Lake Taupo Northern

Lake Taupo the north islands largest natural lake with a surface area of around 600 square kilometres, and the place is a meca for boating enthusiasts and water sports adventure more so in the summer months than the winter where the temperatures frequently reach below freezing.

The town of Taupo is located at the northern end of the lake and is the start of the Waikato river, here you will find the only marina on the lake for boat and kayak hire there are also fishing charters available for trout fishing on the lake, there is trout fishing available also in the Waikato river, you will need a Taupo trout fishing license to fish in the Taupo district, the license can only be used here and no where else in New Zealand, there is ample accommodation at Taupo from hotels and motels through to backpackes and b& b so there is a big choice for first class accommodation.

There are numerous attractions located with in a short drive from the cbd, the Huka falls are just down stream from the lake and you can hire the Huka jet boat for a thrilling ride down the river, the Aratiatia rapids located just down stream from the Wairaki geothermel power plant, are well worth a visit, the rapids are dry for the most part, but daily they open the flood gates from the dam and flood the river bed with the whole of the Waikato rivers water and is an impressive sight.

There is a stunning walk way that starts from County av just outside the cbd and takes you through parkland then joins the right hand side of the Waikato river, the walk way is for mountain bikers as well and spans an impressive distance all the way to Lake Aratiatia, walking a return trip would be a long day and even on a mountain bike you are looking at a full days riding there and back, mountain bikes can be hired from the Taupo cbd.

On the lake there is water skiing and kayaking around the shore line, there are scenic plane and helicopter flights located at the airport around eight kms out side of Taupo and also ski diving if you are into falling from a plane so there is plenty to do in Taupo for the whole family.
