Lake Kuratau South Waikato

 lake kuratau

Located off State Hwy 32 on the western side of lake Taupo, lake Kuratau is accessed on the Kuratau Hydro road the lake is only a few kms from the main road. The lake is the smallest of the Taupo regions trout fishing lakes and can be fished with a Taupo fishing license, the lake is best for fishing out of a small boat or with a flotation tube there are places to fish around the shore line although the area is shallow here, the best spot from the shore is the hydro canal at the eastern end of the lake, this whole area is covered in snow and ice in the winter as the lake is at a high altitude.

The hydro canal makes for an interesting walk, the canal only runs for a short distance before the water goes under ground and through a power station the water emerges out the tail race further down the valley you can walk down the access road past the station, the station was built in 1962 and is still in use to this day.

Kuratau township is directly below the lake and on the shores of lake Taupo, however Kuratau cannot be accessed from the lake you need to get on the main road to Turangi and turn left into Omori road, at the northern end of Kuratau is where the canal water discharges from the lake above, there are some stunning views of lake Taupo from here and there are several boat ramps located here, one on Pihang road and an other on Omori road this ramp has a two wharfs as well, the western side of lake Taupo is a popular fishing area as the water is deep here and follows the cliffs north to Te Hape Bay , there are several holiday homes and bachs for rent in Kuratau through online booking websites so you can book accommodation if you are intending to stay a night or two.
