Kawhia Harbor

Kawhia West Coast New Zealand

Kawhia harbour is on the west coast of the north island around one hour south west of Hamilton city, there are two ways to access the harbor, you can drive from Raglan and around the back of Karioi mountain however this route is gravel road for around 50 percent of the way, the other and more scenic route is along State hwy 31 Kawhia Road, the turn of is around 10 kms past Pirongia heading south.

This twisted and winding road follows the ridge line for most of the way before decending down to the valley below, around half way there is a look out high up on the ridge offering stunning views down across the valley below and glimpses of the southern end of Kawhia harbor.

There is a short bush walk located along the Kawhia road parking is at the Te Kauri Lodge and the track is called the Te Kauri park circuit, you need to cross the road to the start of the Manuka track and follow the track signs the track decends down into the valley and circles back around.

The Kawhia road follows the side of the harbour offering great views of the Kawhia Harbor before rising up into a hill and back down to water level again, you will eventually arrive at the Kawhia settlement, here there is a great wharf for fishing and a shoreline walk and various places for lunch or a picnic alongside the water.

Once you have finished looking around Kawhia head out to the west coast beach along Te Puia road the drive is around 10 minutes, here you can walk out to the sand dunes for a stunning view up the coast to Aotea Harbor and down the coast to Arohaki bay.

There is a great coastal walk here along the west coast south to the Kawhia harbor bar entrance, walking around the corner and into the harbor is Te Ariaotewiwini inlet a small tidal inlet separate from the Kawhia harbor and on the outgoing tide is a great place to explore, you need to allow a few hours as the walk is a few kms through soft sand, you can also walk along the forestry coast road as well this takes you back to the car park.
