    Karikari Peninsula Northland

    karikari peninsula

The Karikari peninsula is located in the far north of the North Island and is a favorite holiday destination in the summer time. At the northern end of Doubtless stretches a long sandy beach this marks the start of the Karikari Peninsula, there is a settlement at Parakerake bay at the start of the main headland and this is one of only a few settlements on the peninsula, there is a petrified forest not far from the main road on the way up the peninsula and worth a look.

On the left hand side of the peninsula is the shallow Rangaunu harbour, this harbour is an excellent place to fish and there is a sand boat ramp at Kohanga bay at the entrance to the harbour this ramp gives you access to the whole of Ragaunu Bay, the beach north east of the harbour is pure white sand similar to Parangaranga harbour and looks stunning against the blue ocean there is not much public access to these beaches as there are no roads to most of them.

Driving on further up Matai Bay road leads you to Matai Bay and the public camping ground this is the end of public road access to the peninsula, Matai Bay camping ground is stunning placed right in front of the main beach, to right is a small headland in the middle of the bay to explore and a good place to fish off the rocks, to the right of the headland is Waikato bay and this stretch of beach is a good place to go hiking with access around to Knuckle point this area is remote and there are tracks all through here, the coast line is stunning and ruggerd and there are a few places to gain access down to the water line.
