Fairy Falls Loop

Fairy-Falls-Waitakere

Fairy Falls is a popular family walk in the Waitakere Ranges just out side of Auckland City, and as with most walks in the Waitakere ranges the peace and solitude of the native bush is just great, the falls carpark is located on Scenic Drive around forty five minutes from the city.

The track to the falls is easy from the start and is well graded and super wide, around five minutes into the walk you arrive at the junction of Old Coach road if you want to walk the loop track this is where you will join the Fairy Falls track when you walk back.

The track starts to get steeper around 20 minutes in and a few steps make there appearance, the track decends and winds down into a valley you can hear the water through the trees and arriving at the hand rail over the first drop the walk starts to get exciting.

Across the slippery rocks the first drop is only around three meters, then the endless decent down the well formed stairs start and you arrive at the base of the second drop which is an impressive fifteen or so meters high here you can walk out over the third drop onto a bridge to view the falls.

You need a good head for heights to look down the third drop as you are right over it, carrying on down the track you arrive at the base of the falls, this third drop is about the same height as the second and there is a large open slab of rock to stand on the track does carry on here to Mountain road over the other side of the stream.

The accent back up the stairs takes a considerable longer time than descending down, climbing back up the side of the valley there is a junction you pass on the way down, the Good Fellow Track this is a loop track that joins The Old Coach road and takes you around a large rock out crop with steep drops and up onto a ridge line that takes you back to the Fairy Falls carpark.

The walk is ideal for people with a bit of fitness the first part of the track is deceiving as the walk is easy however this changes once you start to descend down into the valley, the return walk to the falls only is around one and a half hours, the loop via Good Fellow is around two hours return and worth the extra effort as you catch glimpses of Auckland City through the trees, The Old Coach Road is just a dirt track and will be difficult to walk when has been raining.
