Bethells Beach Auckland

Bethels Beach

Bethells is another great west coast beach there are two ways to get there, the most scenic route is off scenic drive a short way up from Swanson road and turn right into Te Henga road and onto Bethells road, the other route is through Waitakere township and turn left over the bridge into Bethells road.

Lake Wainamu walking track is located just before Bethells beach access road, as you cross over the bridge, this fantastic walk is along a creek bed that flows out of Lake Wainamu the lake is not that big but is well worth a walk through the sand dunes and bush tracks to get there.

During the winter you will just about have the beach to your self but during the hot summer and on week ends it is a different story, this beach is popular during the summer and like most west coast beaches you need to swim when the life guards are on duty as the surf and currents are unpredictable.

Bethells Beach and the ajoining Oneils Bay further north are popular surfing beaches year round and on most week ends surfers flock to the area, the beach is also popular with walkers and hikers the last section of the Hillary Trail is accessable from both the Lake Wainamu carpark and from Oneils Bay that goes through to constable road, the view from the top of the cliff is fantastic and on a good day you can see right down to the Manukau harbour entrance further south. .

There are some other great walks at the beach, turn left down the beach and there is a large cave and a walking track that takes you up above the coastline and goes all the way to Anawhata beach further south, turning right takes you over the lagoon and to a small island and headland and up and over a saddle takes you to Oneils bay there are some fantastic areas to explore all around here, and in the middle of Oneill bay is another cave you can walk through.
