    Ruapekapeka Pa

Ruapekapeka Historical Reserve is an important reminder of the battles between Maori and the British forces in the early days of New Zealand history the historical reserve is the place of the Ruapkapeka Pa the largest and most complex Pa site in New Zealand.

Ruapekapeka Pa was built on a strategic location with extensive views over the entire area perched high up on a mountain side the Pa was built specifically to stand up to the canon fire of the British forces in the early days of New Zealand.

Ruapekapeka in Maori means bats nests and gets this name from the many dugouts that are scattered all over the Pa site, the dugouts had a narrow entrance at the top which lead to shelters or small caves which protected the Warriors from canon fire.

The battle that took place at Ruapekapeka between local Maori and the British forces was the place of the last battle of the Flagstaff Wars the Pa was built in 1845 and the outer walls were trenches with a palisade or wall in between the outer and inner trench this made breaching the defences that much more difficult should they come under attack.

There are many remnants still visible today at the Ruapekapeka Pa, the dugouts are very distinctive and are scattered all over the Pa site with some of the entrances to the shelters or caves visible at the bottom of the dugouts, the outline of the trenches can be seen and one of the British canons are on the site, the views from the Pa site across the farmland below are fantastic a great place of New Zealand history.
