Waitakere Reservoir Tramline Walk

Waitakere Dam Walk

This moderate walk starts from Scenic Drive in the Waitakere ranges over looking Auckland city, on the way up scenic drive from swanson end there are a few glimpses of Auckland on your left hand side, but the best views are from a look out which is located on the right hand side driving up from swanson end of scenic drive, you have to look hard to find the road for all the trees. The look out road is one way only so do not return back down the same road, the view from here is stunning on a fine day as you get 360 views all around.

The track out to the Waitakere Reservoir starts at the top of scenic drive just as you level out from climbing up the ranges on your right hand side, you can not miss it as there is a large sign and carpark, the walk down to the lake is fairly easy as is all down hill and on a tarmac road, this area is rich in native trees such as Kauri and create homes for many other species that grow alongside such as Rimu, Kahikitea, Puriri, Totara, Puketea and Tanekaha the bush is dense here and pays to keep to the tracks as you could easily get lost in the trees.

When you arrive at the lake there is a look out that gives you a view down into the valley and out across the reservoir, there are two tracks that start here one on your right takes you along the side of the valley this is probaly the more interesting track, half way along you walk under a waterfall that is diverted over your head, this spot gives you a view down into the valley floor that holds the over flow from the dam.

As you proceed along the track you go through a series of low tunnels as this is the maintenance track for the water supply to Auckland it is a railway track of small gauge as they run a shuttle along here, you will eventually come to a locked Tunnel where the track disappears inside this is as far as you can proceed.

Back to the dam and walk on, this track takes you over the dam to the other side of the lake, just past the dam face you can go left which takes you around the lake to a second dam which is made of earth and then follows the lake for a bit before heading back into the bush.

Turn right when past the main dam this takes you on a fairly long walk back down the ranges, to return back to scenic drive you need to back track the way you came down the walk back takes a while longer as is all up hill to the car park, this track is suitable wet or dry and is a full days walking, the walk is a scenic one with great views of native bush and scenic views down into the valley well worth making the trip out there.
