Little Huia To Waterfall Bay

This coast walk is on the extreme side and is not for the in experienced or unfit, has been a while since We have been here, but the place has not changed at all.

The walk starts at the end of Huia road before you go up the hill to Whatipu, by the bridge that spans the little creek, this is where the game fishing boats launch to head out over the Manukau bar, the walk is not through the bush but along the rugged west coast harbour entrance.

This walk has to be taken on the out going tide and you need to return before the tide comes back, mainly because as the tide turns back in the huge west coast swells start coming in as well, the first part from Huia to the first point is easy well easier than what is coming next any way, from here on there are two spots where you are going to jump in the water as you have to cross a couple of guts if the tide has gone out enough the water is only wast high.

Around the next couple of points is easy and dry, then you will need to re enter the water again, there are endless nooks and crannys to explore all along here you can even go up into the bush but it is steep and in accessible in places.

You do not have to stop at waterfall bay it is possible to go all the way to Whatipu beach but you will need someone to pick you up as there is not enough time to return back the way you come in. Also do not do this walk alone any accident on these rocks can be fatal there are places where you are going to have to climb the rock face 20 or so meters up above the water to cross over guts as the only other option is free swimming in the dangerous and swift current that races past the rocks.

This is one place you do not need to be on the incoming tide with any swell running on the coast as the wash goes straight up the rock faces. There is a track that comes out from Whatipu road down into Destruction gully you can also return up this track but you need some one to pick you up or face the walk back along the road to huia which is a long walk back down.
