Tunnel Beach Dunedin

Tunnel Beach Dunedin

Tunnel beach is part of the stunning coastline just south of Dunedin it is an eroded part of the mainland as the swells from the ocean pound this part of the southern coast, Access is along Blackhead road and turn into Tunnel Beach road the car park is a short distance down the road.

The track is well graded and easy to walk on in most weather conditions but you really need a nice day as this coastline is exposed to the elements, the walk down is easy as it is down hill all the way to the tunnel, there are spectacular views of the sheer cliff face up and down the coastline as you descend down the track, at the bottom the track levels out onto the small headland.

Walking out to the highest point at the end offers a stunning view to Lawyers Head one way and all the way to Brighton beach the other, there is a hole through the point where the swells roll through but this is not the tunnel.

The tunnel is back just before the start of the peninsula there is a small hole in the ground the tunnel was hand carved by John Cargill for his family to access the beach down below the headland back in the 1870s, there are formed steps inside the tunnel and you need to be sure no one is coming back up the tunnel before you go down as there is no where to pass.

The best time to visit is low tide with a small ocean swell as the beach is very small and the waves break right in close to the beach, and this is about as far as you can go, there are sheer cliffs all along here and the swell breaks right on the cliff face, Tunnel beach is well worth the effort to view and the walk back up will take twice as long as it did coming down.
