Shakespeare Regional Park


The Shakespeare Regional Park is a open wildlife sanctuary operated by the Auckland city council, the parks area takes up the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula around forty minutes north of Auckland city, the regional park is a popular destination for families particuly in the summer time and can get crowded on a hot summers day. 

There are two beautiful sandy beaches located with in the park Okoromai Bay and Te Haruhi Bay both have facilities and there is ample parking at both locations, both beaches are popular for swimming when the weather is warm, and the beaches are a great place to kayak, for the adventurous you can explore the rocks at the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

The park offers a few options for walking tracks, the carpark just past the automatic gates is the start of the main walk that takes you up the hillside to a viewing platform, here you can see just about the entire Hauraki Gulf in a stunning three hundred and sixty degree view, the track then carries on to the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula where you can see Tiritiri Matangi Island, you can also walk around at sea level from Army Bay on the outgoing tide.

Part of the Shakespeare Regional Park is also a wildlife sanctuary there is a predator proof fence surrounding the area, and you go through the automatic gates to enter the park, no dogs are permitted with in the park boundaries, the eastern end of Te Haruhi Bay sports a public camping ground suitable for camper vans and tents, bookings are through the Auckland City council. 

At the northern tip of Whangaparaoa Peninsula there is a gun emplacement from the war days, you can see the concrete structure at sea level if you walk around the end of the peninsula, also the northern area from Army Bay can be closed to the public as the army has a firing range located here if the red flag is flying at Army Bay boat ramp you cannot walk around the rocks.
