Lake Arapuni

Lake Arapuni

Lake Arapuni is located in the Waikato region and is the result of the Arapuni power station, the dam face is part of  the Arapuni road that runs over the top and the power station is further down stream. There are several access points to the lake the most popular is Jones Landing off Lake Arapuni road, Jones Landing also has a good boat ramp and a camping site with facilities, the other access point is of Bulmer road directly opposite Jones Landing on the other side of the lake there are other access points but these are the closest to the dam, both these areas are a good place for a picnic on a fine day.

There is a walking track that starts back at the dam on Arapuni road and takes you out to Jones landing the track is only around 2.5 kms long and takes you along the lake edge.

The lake is quite long and extends from Arapuni right down to Lake Waipapa further south, most of the lake is isolated and the area around Arapuni is mostly farmland the further south you go it gets more scenic with forest lining the banks, traveling through here on a kayak or boat is the only way to take in the scenery as there is not alot of roads in the lower part of the lake.

While you are here there is the Arapuni power station to explore, you go back down the Arapuni road and to the township and there is parking above the swing bridge that was built for access to the power station back in the 1920 you can walk over the swing bridge to the power station on the other side of the gorge the view from above the river is spectacular and well worth a visit.
